About the Author

Patrick McDermott received a Ph.D. in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Rochesterin 1985 and a masters degree in Radiological Physics from Wayne State University in 1993. He wasboard certified by the American Board of Medical Physics in 1997. He has been a practicing clinicalmedical physicist for twenty years, first at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit and currentlyat the William Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak Michigan. McDermott is an adjunct AssociateProfessor at Wayne State University and at Oakland University. He taught in the Wayne StateUniversity graduate medical physics program from 1993 to 2005. He has been teaching medicalresidents for almost twenty years. He won teaching awards for teaching residents in 2004 and in2006. He is the author of eight peer reviewed papers in medical physics.

This book is fabulous. For years, radiation oncology residencies have recommended Khan as "the book" for medical physics, but let's face it: Khan is painful to get through (at best), and its content swings between being overly simplistic and overly technical. As a resident, I despaired of ever learning physics from that book. Fortunately, a colleague let me page through his copy of McDermott, and I was immediately hooked. This book approaches medical physics at an appropriate level for residents, and it is much more readable. If you read the excellent review by S. Leeds above, I fully agree. Moreover, I studied and passed the ABR physics boards in 2013 using this book. Drs. McDermott and Orton, THANK YOU for filling a long standing void in radiation oncology education.

Read it as a 1st year rad onc resident, did very well on the RAPHEX, understood physics much better for clinical scenarios. Highly readable, just go through it over a weekend, it's nice.

I had to undergo radiation therapy and, because it was a big deal to me, I needed to understand as best I could what they were doing to me. This book helped me do that. This book is at a beginners level for the physics but does explain the technologies being used at my hospital. The information in the book certainly allowed me to ask more rational questions of my radiologists and of my clinical physicists.

Great Book for the physics course taught in all radiation oncology residencies - just the right level and written in plain English. Supplement with additional resources as needed, but gives a good foundation without overdoing it.

Good book for any resident in radiation oncology. However I would recommend to go through 'Applied Physics for Radiation Oncology' by Stanton & Stinson before going through this one.

This book is very informative and detailed on the physics aspect of the radiation therapy. It is worth the price paid for it.

It's a good book, but its content does not meet my expectation. Anyway, I will buy other books later.

I teach this subject, and this is by far the BEST TEACHING book I've seen in the past few years, since I began teaching. It is written in plain English, with descriptions and narratives that anyone can understand. The authors did a FANTASTIC JOB! They even include a math review that I feel they took directly from my lecture! All the math formulas are explained, and I see all the little hints and tips, present in the text, that are usually left out of text books, but that I always give my students to help them learn.I've been teaching radiation therapy physics courses to students in medical dosimetry and radiation therapy academic programs. When I myself took the course as a student, we used Khan. Coming from a physics degree background, it was ok, but I could tell that the other students struggled with the terminology and math. Once I graduated and took over teaching the course (2 years later) I started using Hendee (not well-organized, and important items are difficult to locate because they are in the middle of large paragraphs), and supplementing with Khan's Lectures (small, summarized version of the main physics book by Khan, love the color pictures). Even with that, I have still felt disappointed with all the books I've seen. Then, one day, the program director from one of the programs bought this book (she's always on the lookout) and left it on my chair. I have been ranting and raving about it ever since, showing it off to last year's students as well as coworkers, and I can't WAIT to use it next year! I'm even going to update all my lectures to coincide with the the book.One recommendation I have is to eventually get it in full color, and make it available on Kindle. My students carry so many books and notes, that having access to it on their smart phones or iPads would be so practical. I know that many professionals would love to have instant access to it via a smart phone, while on the job or teaching in the clinic.THANK YOU TO THE AUTHORS, YOU HAVE MADE LEARNING PHYSICS SO MUCH MORE ACCESSIBLE TO SO MANY STUDENTS! It is easy to go through this book quickly because everything just works. I'm a Java programmer just beginning to learn C and I could not be happier with this purchase.

Absolutely fantastic! This will really take your programming skills to another level! It's not a beginner's book but someone with a basic foundation in programming can work through this book and learn a great deal. Daniel Holden is a fantastic and entertaining author (which is sometimes rare in the tech writing field) that clearly presents the subject matter in a great manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to delve into C or learn a thing about Lisps (or both). Kudos!

Really disappointed by the pre-built parser combinator. Overall I felt the book is too shallow and doesn't really dive too deeply into any of the concepts it covers. Over 75% of the code is already done for you in the form of the parser combinator(3500+ lines of code) vs the ~1000 you write. The book is available for free on the website from the author, I suggest looking it over before making the purchase.

Uses a prebuilt parser combinator with referenced source, for most people fine, but if you are really picky you may need to pick up an additional book.

Really nice read. As an exercise, rewriting the compiler with infix notation instead of polish seems like a fun thing to try.

As a programmer who learned in high level languages, this book was a perfect exercise to dip my feet into C. I've always wanted to write my own programming language some day, and this book definitely gave me an idea about how one would do that, and some of the considerations I'd have to make if I did. During the course of this book I encountered my first segfault, and learned a lot about debugging and memory management as a side effect. This book won't teach you everything, and a lot of the parsing is abstracted away, but the ups and downs of the bugs along the way coupled with the absolute joy of getting things right, and trying out the language, and the understanding that I built along the way, and all the 'a-ha' moments, was excellent, and I can't recommend it highly enough for new programmers.The author himself also replied promptly when I found what I felt to be an error in his code, which was the case, and he helped me figure out what to do. It turned out that there was a bug in the version of the source that I had downloaded, and I just had to update the mpc.c file to fix it.
