About the Author
BOOTON HERNDON (1915–1995), like Desmond Doss, was Virginia–born and fought in World War II as a young adult. Working as a reporter for the New Orleans Item after graduating from college, Herndon's career was interrupted by war and he found himself both on Normandy's Omaha Beach and then later in the Battle of the Bulge where he received a medal, although he would later downplay his role on the battlefield. After the war, Herndon worked for the New York Daily Mirror and wrote for the rest of his life, including more than one thousand articles for magazines such as TIME, Cosmopolitan, and the Saturday Evening Post. He was also the author of twenty–three books, including The Unlikeliest Hero: The Story of Desmond T. Doss, Conscientious Objector Who Won His Nation's Highest Military Honor, originally published in 1967. The book was based on personal interviews with Desmond Doss, and is now rereleased under the title Redemption at Hacksaw Ridge.

As a Christian and retired USAF medic, I was intrigued when I saw the trailer for the movie Hacksaw Ridge. I had just learned about Desmond Doss' exploits from another book and had to see the movie. It brought tears to my eyes the brutality that was suffered on both sides and the caring, motivated drive that kept Doss going. Naturally I wanted to learn more so I picked up this book and read it in two days. The story was captivating and inspiring that faith can lead a person to achieve incredible heights! Now I see that as he feared, the movie took creative license to make it more spectacular. If they'd have stuck to this book, it would have been the same result. Read this book a get the true picture!
There seems to be some confusion on which book is the unabridged version and the basis for the Mel Gibson movie, "Hacksaw Ridge."Redemption at Hacksaw Ridge (hardback) is a much expanded, reedited edition of the original The Unlikeliest Hero, which went out of print in 1967. The new edition contains nearly three times as many pictures, a new Foreword, and Epilogue tracing Desmond's life after the war and his recovery from wounds and tuberculosis.Hero at Hacksaw Ridge (paperback) has the same Hacksaw Ridge poster cover, but it is an abridged version.Jeanie L Allen, PR/Social Media Consultant | Desmond Doss Council
WAR IS HELL, but Desmond Does brought the unconditional love of Heaven with him wherever he went, including war. His story is about an unlikely warrior and unlikely man whose CEO was truly God. And, how Desmond demonstrated this truth by fighting in and living through serving in the South Pacific during WWII.
In reading books about World War Two I have heard mention of this medic, when I heard about a movie I went and found a book to read on his life. I couldn't put it down everything I love and respect was all wrapped up in one man Desmond Doss, a God loving, USA loving, Medal of Honor recipient...... "Wow !"
When I saw the movie scene up on Hacksaw ridge, I had tears running down my cheeks, and I know that many others watching it felt the same. When I saw this book, I knew that I had to buy it.This story proves that sometimes, the biggest heroes aren't those with guns.At basic training he started out as a despised man, mocked and ridiculed for his belives and for his refusal to touch a gun. But when bullets started flying and the cry "MEDIC" rang out, all those prejudices vanished like a fart in the vind.Time and time again, Desmond did everything he could to save as many lives as possible, while continuously risking his own and almost right away, any idea that he was a coward vanished, and his star rose to a level he never could have imagined. After taking Hacksaw Ridge, where Doss was severely wounded, headquarters credited him for saving 100 men, while Doss said he only saved 50. They eventually agreed to meet in the middle of 75.Anyway, this is an amazing story of a man that choose to stay true to his values while the entire world was tearing itself apart.
The book provides no real details about the most heroic events of Doss on the battlefield. It almost glosses over them with no first-hand accounts from the men he saved. The book reads like a long obituary. This a story that must be told, but it must be told better in order to properly honor Desmond Doss for his service both before and after the war.
Incredible man, incredible faith! Kudos to Mel Gibson for bringing this to life. The movie was great and the book is even better.
Outstanding...just as good as the movie! Gives a more in depth look at the man, the legend...Desmond T. Doss! The movie only covers a fraction of the heroism that this man faced, especially the man he saved in the rice field! Highly recommended for further understanding of Mr. Doss. What an inspiration for others!
